What data base do you use and what algorithm do you use to process it? I'd love to steal your 5 years of hard work?! I worked up a quick report this morning for DM43... SEARCH FOR RELAY-NO = '*43'. ADD CUR-PRD-SLS-UNITS PLUS PER-2-SALES-UNITS GIVING TOTAL-UNITS. MULTIPLY TOTAL-UNITS TIMES RELAY-RETAIL GIVING SALES-DOLLARS. MULTIPLY RELAY-COST TIMES TOTAL-UNITS GIVING SALES-COST. COLUMNAR BY SECTION TOTAL SALES-COST TOTAL SALES-DOLLARS AVERAGE SALES-DOLLARS. SORT ASCENDING SECTION. This is a quick and dirty way to see total sales dollars by promo section. It assumes a few things it shouldn't... for example, all the units might not have been sold at the promo price, and there might be overlapping promos. However, it does appear to give a quick dollars and costs figure for each promo section, in order to possibly see which sections are more productive than others. Does anyone have an RQ that does something similar? I guess it could also be done by coding the SKU's, resetting To-Date sales, getting a more accurate sales units for the promo period, but I'm trying to avoid messing with the To-Date field. This is what actually happens-to me and to you: Last year Lawn & Garden wanted to closeout the remaining Lawn Chief lawn mowers. These mowers were the dogs they couldn't easily sell; self-propelled, electric start, etc. So they discounted these VERY heavlily. A self-propelled that normally cost $300 was as low as $125. There were also some other simular deals on chain saws, tillers, etc. I decided to take advantage of this deal even though it was winter, I figured I could sell these in the off season for cost plus 25%, pick up a few bucks and go on down the road. I bought $50,000 (aprox) of this equipment and had a sale and sold most of it. Guess what I never knew: Cotter keeps track of your warehouse margins (both negative and postive!) Now a normal purchase has a small positive margin of 3% to 8%, but these had a negative margin of 200%! (The lawn mowers all came from the warehouse). So here's the math: My purchase of $50,000 at cost plus 25% produced a gross profit of $12,500. This impacted my patronage dividend to the tune of ........ready for this.........$12,356! So I made $144 to cover advertising, payroll etc. I lost money because Cotter penalizes us for helping them get rid of the dogs! On the closeout list that came on CSN last night, for example, there is a "sugar & creamer" set, SKU# 458375. There are 170 of them in the Kansas City warehouse. The normal cost is $5.15, but you can now buy these for $1.00. Great! Buy them all for $170, but you just cost Cotter $$705.50 and you will reduce you patronage dividend by ?????. I don't know how to figure it, but I'd say at least by $176, so you really paid $2 for the item not $1. Mad yet? If not you don't buy closeouts! I'll let you know how it ends. I'd appreciate any help! See ya! David Casaletto True Value Home Center Pittsburg, KS 66762 ------------------------------ Date: 02 Apr 97 19:46:15 EST From: "WILLIAM H. Turns out these are True Value brand from Homelite castings manufactured by GPE. Now Cotter sold GPE to MTD and Homelite won't coperate with MTD, so we have mowers that we can't buy accesories or parts for. We have already sold two mowers that we had to take back [used], because grass catchers are no longer available. I've updated the Hardlines web page with the March messages, and the index search is also updated as well. Although the index allows you to search past issues for particular topics, it does not go directly to the part of the article with the topic you searched for. Once you jump to the article, you can use the Edit/Find command (usually control-F) in your browser window to locate the text in the article. I'm planning a better search utility in the future... probably summertime. With the Spring markets around the corner, I thought it might be a good time to try and get additional folks on the list. If you are going to your wholesaler's market, please pass along the info about the Hardlines list to other dealers who might have email access. You can either point them to the web page, or have them send me email and I'll subscribe them. The more folks on the list, the better for everyone... more points of view, more ideas, more controversy , more of the stuff we all are on the list to see. Another project I'm working on for the web page is an area for collecting RQ procedures, spreadsheet templates, etc. I'm still mulling over how exactly to accomplish this, but I think it would be beneficial to have a spot where folks could pick up this kind of info. Look for further notes about this as I get the area set up. The merger is done... it will be quite interesting to see what impact this will have on all the upcoming markets (Cotter, SS, Ace, HWI, etc.) as each supplier puts their "spin" on the effect it will have on the industry. Stay tuned... Spring has finally sprung... at least here in the Northeast the grass seed, fertilizer, etc. has started to pour out the door. Hoping for sunshine tomorrow.... Some of the newer programs like MS Access and the newest Filemaker Pro have wizards built-in to make this task easier, but you really need to weigh the benefits of the notebook (fast lookup? built-in calculations?) vs the paper output. There are a few posts on the Internet discussion groups (Usenet) that mention how all the hotels are booked so attendance at Freaknik will probably be lower than last year. Attendance has been declining, and estimates for last year range from 50,000 to 150,000. I'd bet that the various groups got some nice deals to hold their shows in Atlanta during the Freaknik weekend, in order to reduce the available hotel rooms, especially in the downtown areas. As to the expressway exit and bomb management topics, there have been a few threats and rumors of threats. This weekend is the anniversary of the Waco tragedy, and Atlanta has had other bombings in addition to the Olympic Park bombing (an abortion clinic and a gay nightclub I believe). Several newsgroups on the Internet have had postings about possible bombings of the Freaknik gathering, and add this to the Waco anniversary and the upcoming McVeigh trial and you can see why the Atlanta police are planning to upgrade the security. Freaknik turned out to be mostly a traffic hassle, although lots of folks were surprised in the AM by phone calls, loud neighbors, or phone calls at 1AM, 2AM, 3AM, etc. I arrived Saturday night and found that the party was going strong at the Marriott Marquis. The lobby was crowded with partying folks and the hallways and elevators were crowded. Nothing worse than Fort Lauderdale in mid-Februuary, and probably a little quieter (and more sober) than Mardi Gras, but not exactly a comfortable atmosphere for convention-goers. The Marriott gave a nice lesson in customer service by placing free bottles of wine in rooms of non-Freakniks, and giving one night's credit to the room bill. If you left before Tuesday morning, you might want to contact the Marriott and get a refund for one night. The wine might be tougher to get. :-) The Cotter show was pretty standard fare... the convention hall was LONGER but the overall look was the same as St Louis. Talk about the merger, who was retiring and who would be doing doing what once the merger was completed were the main topics. Go to say hi to a bunch of folks from the Hardlines list at the show, but didn't get together in any formal way. It was a little tough to plan restaurant reservations with Freaknik going on, although by Sunday night it was pretty easy to get into most any restaurant. Not much new product-wise, although Bill Round found a vendor selling a neat device that connects your exhaust pipe to a garden hose to humanely eradicate gophers and chipmunks in your lawn and/or garden. Bob Johnson, addressing the Triad users at the Sunday night meeting... "On December 31, 1999, I'd recommend you be home". That's it from the airport/flight. I even hear that there is one guy that was a Cotter member for some 20+ years and now works for (shudder, gasp, can you believe it) Home Depot, that's right Agent Orange. And by the way it's not just PC's. We've experienced the same problems with an FDT, VDT's as well as PC's. There is no magic cure. Each instance has it's own cure. Some of the things I've done are replace the interwall wiring, replace the I/O cable that attaches directly to the terminal, replaced the I/O cable that connects to the system from the interwall, replaced just the modular end on cables and in one instance relocated the I/O cable as it was picking up interference. I have been able to solve all of our terminal problems except one, and I believe I have traced it to the actual serial card in the PC itself. Hense Label Works. But lets say I want to redo a section in my store to bin labels. Great I can print them by location. Lets say I just want to walk the isles and print new labels on demand for missing, worn, outdated, ect. We were creating a fake PO and printing labels against that PO. I have tried a new system and like it very well. I create a "fake" PO in MPO and add one "fake" detail line. Then I pass the PO over to the IST. I then use the IST in the receive inventory section and as I scan an item on the floor it says the item is not on the PO, would I like to add it. Boy would I, so I add the item with a quantity of how many facings I need. Most items need 1 label but if I have 2 facings I key in the quantity of 2. Then I pass the information from the IST back to the PO file just as if you were doing receiving with the IST. Then I print labels agains the PO choosing to print quantity of, amount received. Then I go into function ROF and am able to delete a PO with a status R. This seems to be easier than writing down the numbers manually. They will only run a POS (with receipt printer) for about 1/2 hour. Beyond that is not recommended. You'll find that most UPS's are designed only for short usage, and not as a real battery backup. They assume that you will finish the work you have open, save the files, and shut-down gracefully. If the power is real suspect and you run into frequent blackouts that last longer than an hour, then I'd suggest a generator designed to power computers (most don't generate the right type of current). Anybody else have the same problem? >> from: Terry White Eugene True Value Hardware We had similar problem. Were advised by California of the PC problem. Disconnected PC, but didn't help. After FE replaced almost all of the I/O hardware, he finally replaced the credit card modem and cable. No trouble since. I kept telling him that system was crashing during a credit card transaction. On a different note, thanks John for the hardlines Digest. Great information. Also, I stayed at Marriot Marquis. Didn't get any bottle of wine or one night free, but did get a free bottle of beer with my room service. I wonder what we have in store for us in New Orleans!
