I referred him to the truevalue site to find the store nearest him ( I do this often with web responses ). If any of you "hardware guro's" can help this gentleman, please email him or call him. Our store is in California, and for the most part we sell Kwikset locksets and the True Value Locksets. Here is the message: I have a front door brass door handle. An internal peice of the hardware broke, and now the unit will not function. I'm looking for a replacement unit, hopefully identical to the broken one, or at least so thethe holes in the door match up. The only name or manafacturer information I can find on it is on the striking plate near the plunger, and it says "ARROW". I went to Home Depot tonight and they had several brands, including Baldwin and Tilton, however they did not carry ARROW. The brands they carried did not have matching screw holes, etc., so they wouldn't match up as replacement hardware without making a mess out of the door. The house is about fourteen (14) years old, if that gives any idea of date of manufacture. The handle is about 11 3/4" long, and I would describe the "top and bottom design as shaped like the ace of spades". The lock set is not build into the handle, but is separate. I'm hoping that you are the manufacturer. If you are, please send me a response at both email addresses below. I live in Glastonbury, CT 06033, which is just outside Hartford, CT. If a phone call is better, I can be reached at 860-273-1193 (W) or 860-633-9177 (H). If here is any other information I can provide, please let me know. Thank you, Gary M. But the more replies I received from the internet, the more I found myself referring people to the true value site (actually, their cgi data base on where to find a true value store nearest them). I have since realized the importance of this site, and I believe that they could actually put direct mails on-line, have customers order on line, and send the order to the nearest participating member. That member would have the order in their printq (if they were using tru-trac) the next morning as incoming mail. The order would be calculated, the credit card processed, approved, and credited to the members account They would then deliver the stuff via their truck, US mail, UPS, or customer pickup. Maybe some day.... Re: Sign packages, The Tru-trac system has a great package called a sign designer. I have no idea why they don't continue to market or develop that product (kinda like snow)...guess they don't have the right people to market and train about the goods, or they don't have enough people knowledgeable about the systems, or they just don't have enough people!!! I've been reading your Hardlines Digest for a few weeks now, I wanted to let you know who I am. First of all, my name is: RALPH WITKIN, and I live in the LA area of Southern Calif. I was born in the retail Hardware business, and had worked with my father for over 20 years before he sold the store and retired. I had been working for a True Value member near Beverly Hills for the last few years, and am going to be starting with an ACE dealer in Santa Monica next month. Our store (the one my father started) was among the original group of True Value members in California. I've also considered leaving Los Angeles during the past few years and looked at both the Midwest and Northeast, but so far, I haven't made any definite decisions yet. I would enjoy E-Mailing with any and all of you individually -- I'm fairly new with the Internet, and find this just wonderful - the technology that's available to all of us these days. However, we pay extra to get a listing as "True Value Hardware" in the white pages in addition to our "Cornell's True Value Hardware" listing. It's relatively cheap, and we're the only guys in the directory who do it, so when folks call information and ask for "True Value Hardware" they get our number. As to the logic of leaving your phone number out of the book, that seems silly. They print the store phone numbers on their sale flyers, so folks will call for the sale items anyway. Years ago, our Cotter rep suggested leaving the phone number off the back of the sale flyers so customers couldn't call and check if the item was in stock. However, I'd rather thay not come in if we're out of an item, so they don't complain loudly at the counter about how we're always out of sale items. > > >How does one handle the PO Names from Cotter on their weekly order, if they >receive 2 orders a week?? So our last order was PO # C0616. This is partially to take advantage of a new feature (not sure what level it's released on, but I think "late" Level 18) that lets you display in MultiView by PO Number. So we can bring up all the items from PO C0616, or all the items received on relay 8 (R08 in our case), etc. Not a big deal, but it's just a procedure that helps keep a more detailed history of purchasing. After transmitting the PO, he/she is now instructed to add to the PO "DONE" to that PO, which in turn will not pass through BTC. John -- we use to use PO with dates, but that requires someone to make the PO --->we now have that process in SEQ --- less mental work and quarantees that the PO will be waiting for us (except for this last incident). The dating of the PO is still visible in multiview. We have level 17 and use multiview --> have you tried using it to change PO data while in IMU -->love it! Dana -- stay on top of your DC ! Pencil and paper "honesty tests" sound great, and may even work, but they are illegal in the People's Republic of Massachusetts, and a few of the other socialist states. Also, in denying an applicant a position based on a "bad test score" may expose the business to charges of discrimination, defamation and possession by evil spirits. The big guys can afford a raft of lawyers to handle this stuff; we can't . A simple reference check on a full application to verify previous employment is the first defence. It the applicant will "steal the truth" on dates of employment, position, pay rates, etc., then they will probably steal cash and merchandise, too. A credit check might be nice, and relatively cheap. I think that's a good indicator, but may not be legal in most states. A count-in, count-out procedure for cashiers with recorded results is a must. If they keep screwing up, get rid of them. If you are computerized, and even if you are not, the crafty thief will ignore the obvious and go for the gold.... cards. Those credit card numbers are valuable. This is an exposure. Is there a fiduciary responsibility for us here? Merchandise pass-throughs at the front desk is an easy way for big losses to occur. Use a mystery shopping service. People have rigged up dual display terminals on one POS register port to observe what the cashier is ringing. Watch the returns. Those over $5 or $10 need mgr's signature or that of co-worker. Set up "partnerships" or co-authorizations where ever possible. Two people decrease the chances of problems, and the added benefit is that partnerships are inherently unstable. We have gradually decreased our weeks of supply as the number of deliveries has increased. With this our turns have also increased to about 5.8 turns at present. As a measure to see if our inventory level could be decrease we ran stock out reports on a and b items and all other stock, adjusting order points to a level we could live with, whether that was being out of stock on an item or just in time replenishment. On all other vendors other than Ace we are presently running weekly suggested orders with about 4-6 weeks supply as these vendors take about 7-10 days to fill and ship. I'd recommend pulling the better stuff, SKU # 608243. Get in touch with a local telco guy and see if they can "obtain" some punch-down blocks and a punch-down tool. When you run the wire, terminate both ends with punch-down blocks, and write unique numbers on the outside of the cable as you run it. We just finished running new sets of wires from the CPU to a few key store areas (POS, receiving, and two manager stations). I haven't switched over the wires yet, but put in the good wire in anticipation of the day when the system will move to ethernet rather than serial wiring. >4. It's really easy to set these up, as you're just sharing files and printers, and if your network is small you don't have as much concern with security. To share files and printers, you just right click on the disk drive, directory, printer, whatever, and then set how you want to "share" it (password or not, read or write files, etc.). It works out pretty well from a customer service point of view, but we haven't successfully been able to lower our inventory levels as much as I would like. Perhaps that is because we are big users of "Minimum Order Point" so we don't get caught with our pants down on a, b, and multiple sale items, I don't know. Our turns are pretty high (5-6). We have paired our safety stock on ROP to 2 weeks for a and b merchandise from Ace and about 3-4 weeks for non Ace vendors. The real down side of 3 orders a week is our inability to regularly audit RSO's before ordering. Thus we "find" a number of inventory problems after the merchandise has arrived. It seems like we are always putting Ace orders away (which averages about 1 - 1-1/2 days a piece for a 300 piece order). It is great to be able to replenish quickly, and to fill special orders virtually next day, but inventory accuracy suffers. Any suggestions Wade? or any others who might be on multiple orders a week?? While we are discussing this, a discussion of various strategies on using ROP might be useful. Also, somebody brought up basic cashier accounting and balancing, etc. It might be interesting if we could all share our "best practices" with regards to balancing, monitoring, counting cashiers, safes, etc. Anybody interested?? ROUND" <102753.622@CompuServe.COM> Subject: ROP, RSO, Multiple orders. Dear Folks and Rick@Cole, Three orders a week? I wish I could do that. I'm o'k with two, but I will agree with you that it seems that we're always doing RSO's or putting orders away. It almost seems as though we need more help... or at least more specialized help. A few comments: 1. I used to be a BIG advocate of "if it's worth buying, it's worth COUNTING!" I am no longer such. I am looking towards divorcing the counting activity from order creation. Counting takes time, and with multiple primary vendor orders in a work week, time is something that slips away too quickly. 2. Location control is the BIG thing to control. This makes the counting easier. I want to make a LOWER level staff member responsible for scanning ZERO quantities on the morning before the Cotter order comes in. The two things on an RSO which are important: Those items which have been selling and print on RSO, and those which don't appear on RSO which are in fact zero on the floor. The justification of zeros on the sales floor with zero QOH in the system is a key item in my opinion. 3. If you sell stuff, you should buy more, unless skus have been targeted to sell to zero. This includes discontinued, promotional and seasonal items near the end of their run. Even if counts are off, your inventory position does not become less favorable if you are buying to replace SOLD merchandise. 4. I've heard that lots of people are doing cycle counts. One 4' panel a day will do just fine. Well, maybe 8'. 12'? This is a "lower level" task which will go a distance towards keeping things under control. 5. Rick@Cole, you have 5 or 6 turns.... What is the composition of you inventory file X movers? Do you have nuts an bolts on there? Well, I guess you don't have a trailer loaded with rock salt and snow shovels out there in San Francisco.... 6. I'm still item pricing out here in the Happy People's Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the state with the highest debt load percentage in the country, more scandalous Kennedys per capita than any other piece of real estate on the planet. Sorry, I get carried away... I'm toying with the idea of stopping that for vast stretches of the store. Throw it up on the shelf and be done with it.. More effort into signage, cycle counting, and sales. 7. The Cotter Manchester warehouse has a higher than normal level of picking mistakes. Nobody is perfect, but there seems to be too much stuff creeping through the cracks which shouldn't. More frightening is that too much is making it past the back room guys. I would really like to discontinue the detailed backroom check in. We find the problems on the floor. Why not formalize that? 8. Negative quantities in the inventory file. Why bother counting? Why not just put them to zero and go forward? Rick Schwartz and I have discussed this many times and our opinion is that your chances for things to eventually "right" themselves. Any more informed observations? 9. Timing has become critical in our business. Our counts get screwed up because count are done with merchandise in receipt. Call-in items from Cotter result in ERP records which follow with the NEXT order's batch, There is sometimes cross-over items which are coming off the truck on the moring the order is being worked. It is sometimes a mess. Holidays are not fun. Vacations are not fun. 10. Given the timing issues, It is almost imperative that the store have tighter organization and more clearly-defined roles. I fall short of this. I read yesterday that teamwork is evident when everybody performs their defined task in the proscribed way; it is a result rather than a process. 11. Got to go!
