ROUND" <102753.622@CompuServe.COM> Subject: Zip Codes Zip Codes. I tried collecting Zip codes via POS a few years ago. I loaded zip codes for all surrounding towns as skus in a department out of the normal book keeping range. I then set up a "hot key" on the vdt's which would plug a quantity of one and sell the sku at a one hundred percent discount. The cashier would ask the customer for a zip, type it, then hit the hot key. The sku would post, the description would print "Thank you MUDVILLE Customer!" on the receipt, and the customer would be on her way. They would show up on the price exception report and clutter that a bit, but then we could pull totals for the range of zip code skus and see what was going on. I don't recall the exact results, but the study suggested that most customers were coming from an area we couldn't afford to mail into or otherwise advertise in. I subsequently concluded that customers were coming in to shop at Round's True Value because of my good looks, or the dog's bad looks; I get those two issues confused. An easy way to collect zip codes and get a daily printout on the Triad is to enter the zip code in the ABA# slot when the customer is paying by check. The zip codes show up on the RCK report each night. Now I realize you must assume that an equal # of customers write checks from each zip code, as do credit card customers, and cash customers. In Pittsburg, KS that is a safe assumption, but in a big city, I'm sure it's not. Anyway, we used this method to conduct a survey to show what percentage of our customers were from a town 8 miles away. Another way we used is to survey the zip codes on free drawing entry forms. I realize neither of these methods are perfect, it just depends on how accurate you need to be. Good luck! See ya! It's kind of a nice feeling to know that you can pile all the relay forms on a shelf where they can sit for 11 months until you can throw them out. Maybe I'll just toss em today. Westchester finally got a Home Depot... they opened a store in New Rochelle about three weeks ago (the opening was delayed a week due to labor problems), and saturated the papers and mail for a few days with sale flyers. We lost two employees to the store, including our paint manager. I took a ride over last Sunday, and found the place was mobbed with customers. Traffic was snarled on the approach road and even worse in the parking lot. Once inside the store, all checkout lanes were open and six deep with customers. Pandemonium reigned... PA announcements were non-stop, generally along the lines of "Can any assistant manager PLEASE come to counter xx!" or "Can we see a manager at customer assistance?". The store had an out-of-control feel... high-speed, but tumbling in a dizzying fashion. I heard two different customers say "Let's just get out of here". Help Wanted signs were everywhere... I overheard two employees discussing schedule issues. "Next time they ask me to work Sunday, I'm gonna tell them I quit". I ran into our ex-paint manager, and he seemed happy with his new job. However, two days ago I found out he's quitting Agent Orange and going to work at a ServiStar lumberyard nearby. Rumor has it that the store is ringing up record sales, and that they can't get deliveries fast enough. From what I saw, they've gotten off toa successful but rocky start. It seems to me that first impressions are pretty important for a new store, and it will be tough to keep folks coming back to a store when the shopping experience was so unpleasant. Home Depot certainly doesn't want folks going home talking about how they had to "get out of there", and they've already blown their big "grand opening" ad budget. It will be interesting to see the store in a few weeks. How's everyone's sales going this season? We've sold more kerosene and gas heaters this year than in the past and the real cold weather is not even here yet! We sell bulk kerosene and the wholesale price is up to $1.05 a gallon (up from $.85 last year). We retail it for $1.69 per gallon. We have a 1,000 tank and our supplier lets us use an old gasoline pump. Have all you Cotter members been taking advantage of the closeouts the buyers have been offering over CSN network? There have been some pretty good deals. We bought 1,200 chair cushions that normally cost $1.99 for $.25, but you've got to be quick! They really want to get rid of most of this stuff quick, at these prices. I guess they need the warehouse space! Well, back to work! I make it a point to check the CSN listings, as there are some real gems hidden in the coal. I've found some of the Christmas stuff from last year can be picked up quite cheap, as well as some of the toy items. I'm waiting for them to drop some of those Master Mechanic power tool prices a little lower, as they've been sitting for a while now at the same price. In other news, a quick note about Cotter's Internet web pages. A few folks were commenting about the cost of the site (rumored to be about $50,000 per month). This might sound high, but a quick check of some of the industry papers shows that corporate sites range in cost from $300,000 per year to as high as $1.5 million. The more expensive sites generally have information that is updated daily, wheras a site like Cotter's (and Ace's, HWI's and the other co-ops) would require less updating. Of course, my site still costs less than $1000 per month... maybe my dad should give me a raise? As for the Orlando Tru Trac/Triad conference, I think we're aiming for a Monday evening get-together, after the big buffet dinner? As the date approaches, I'll try and work up a list of how many folks might be interested in heading somewhere for discussions and beer appreciation. Cheers! Subj: Re: hardlines Digest - V01 #27378 Date: 96-11-23 20:46:16 EST From: JKSpaur To: hardlines@cornells.com Just curious about the groups opinion on the tentitive merger of Cotter and Servistar. Is there any validation of the rumors ? If it can be pulled off ,it will of course change our industry forever. I 've worked for HWI for over 13 years and have seen the same changes many of you have. I also survived the merger of two distributors - Geo. Worthington and Townley Hardware in the early 80's ,only to see them vanish later. I 'm shure everyone remembers the chaos that the Coast to Coast chapter 11 and Servistar merger caused in this decade. What can we expect from this most recent consolidation if it happens ? Will it help or hinder our industry while Depot is posting +7% same store increases ? I would look forward to any input from this group that I may share with the retailers I work with here in So. Hmm.. so the rumor exists in circles outside Cotter membership. Well, I'm not one to start rumors, or even usually to pass them along. However, since someone else (from Southern California?) posted the query I can pass along a few tidbits. Folks who work for Cotter at Allentown have asked us if we heard anything about a merger. They thought the members might have a better source than employees. I also heard the same rumor, plus a date of December 15, from an east coast dealer who had a Chicago-area dealer as his source. So, the rumors are flying, but no confirmation that I've heard. The folks I've spoken with at Cotter have just said stuff like "We've heard the same rumors". We'll see soon, or by December 15 at least. The corporate folks were talking about it amongst themselves. It would be no surprise, the way our industry is going. The other interesting news from the show was to hear that Sears was actively purchasing existing strong hardware stores. Obviously a big threat to Ace, Cotter, etc. If someone drops by from Sears, please give them my number ... We've set up a vendor code for Home Depot and for Sears, and when we price shop these guys and come back with our list, we key the retails into screen V. This allows us to easily reference our costs and retails and compare them to the local "big box" operations.
